The Fifth Great Story

This story tells the tale of numbers. We begin by explaining why people in early civilizations may have needed a number system. Maybe the needed to count how many people lived in their village. Maybe they needed to record how much food was stored in their storage rooms or how far it was to neighboring village. These number systems traveled with various cultures and eventually the concept of 0 came to be that changed everything! The children then explore how various number systems attempted to solve the problem of not having a 0 to use to create other numbers and how much easier our system has been for doing calculations!
